LEARNING DISABILITY ASSESSMENT IN CALGARY

Understand what's
getting in the way of
learning.

Many intelligent and capable students struggle with reading, writing, math, memory, organization, or academic performance despite putting in significant effort. When learning feels harder than it should, it is important to understand why. A Learning Disability Assessment helps identify specific learning disabilities, clarify cognitive and academic strengths and challenges, and provide practical recommendations that support success at school, work, and in everyday life. The goal is to answer important questions, reduce uncertainty, and create a clear path forward.

A Psychologist’s Definition

Learning Disability Assessment, Defined

A Learning Disability Assessment is a comprehensive evaluation designed to determine whether a specific learning disability may be contributing to ongoing difficulties with reading, writing, mathematics, academic achievement, information processing, or learning efficiency. Many individuals with learning disabilities are intelligent, motivated, and capable, yet continue to struggle despite considerable effort and support. A learning disability is not related to intelligence or motivation. Instead, it reflects differences in how the brain processes and uses information. A comprehensive assessment examines cognitive abilities, academic skills, memory, attention, processing speed, executive functioning, and learning patterns to identify strengths and challenges. The goal is not simply to determine whether a learning disability is present, but to provide meaningful insight into how an individual learns, answer important questions about academic performance, and deliver practical recommendations, accommodations, and supports that promote confidence, learning, and long-term success.

Understanding Learning Disability Assessments

Learning disabilities are not a reflection of intelligence, effort, or motivation. Many students with learning disabilities are bright, capable, and hardworking, yet continue to experience challenges with reading, writing, mathematics, memory, organization, processing information, or academic performance. These difficulties can affect confidence, school engagement, and overall well-being when the underlying cause is not fully understood.

A Learning Disability Assessment helps identify specific patterns of strengths and challenges that may be affecting learning. The assessment provides a comprehensive understanding of cognitive functioning, academic skills, and learning processes while helping families, schools, and students better understand educational needs. Results can guide accommodations, interventions, educational planning, and supports that help students reach their potential.

Learning Disability Assessments FAQs

  • A Gifted Assessment can provide clarity, validation, and a deeper understanding of how an individual learns, thinks, and experiences the world. Results may help guide educational planning, enrichment opportunities, classroom supports, and future decision-making while helping families, educators, and individuals better understand exceptional strengths and developmental needs.

  • Yes. This is often referred to as twice-exceptionality (2e). Some gifted individuals also have ADHD, autism, learning disabilities, or other challenges. In these situations, strengths can sometimes mask difficulties, while difficulties can sometimes mask giftedness. A comprehensive assessment helps identify both exceptional abilities and areas where additional support may be beneficial.

  • A Gifted Assessment may be beneficial for children, teens, or adults who demonstrate advanced reasoning, rapid learning, exceptional curiosity, strong problem-solving abilities, or academic performance that appears significantly above age expectations. It can also be helpful when parents, educators, or individuals have questions about intellectual strengths, educational needs, or whether giftedness may be present.

  • Assessment results can provide valuable information about learning strengths, intellectual abilities, and educational needs. Recommendations may help guide enrichment opportunities, advanced programming, classroom accommodations when appropriate, and educational planning that ensures an individual's strengths are appropriately challenged and supported over time.

You don’t have to figure this out alone.

Support for advanced reasoning, rapid learning, intellectual curiosity, creativity, academic engagement concerns, social-emotional development, twice-exceptionality (giftedness with ADHD, autism, or learning differences), educational planning, and questions about whether giftedness may be present — through a comprehensive Gifted Assessment designed to identify exceptional cognitive strengths, provide meaningful insight into how an individual thinks and learns, clarify unique educational and developmental needs, and deliver practical recommendations that support academic success, personal growth, enrichment opportunities, and long-term development.
