NU PSYCHOLOGY TALKS...THE ART OF ADOPTING A GROWTH MINDSET

Updated: Mar 8, 2023

What is a growth mindset in Psychology?

A growth mindset in Psychology refers to the belief that one's abilities and intelligence can be developed and improved through effort and perseverance. People with a growth mindset believe that they can grow and learn from challenges and failures, and that their abilities are not fixed traits but can be developed and strengthened over time. In contrast, people with a fixed mindset believe that their abilities and intelligence are set traits that cannot be changed. They may avoid challenges and give up easily in the face of difficulty. Often they believe that their abilities are limited and that success is determined by innate talent. Research has shown that having a growth mindset can have a positive impact on motivation, resilience, and overall well-being. People with a growth mindset tend to be more persistent in the face of challenges, more likely to embrace new experiences, and more likely to develop a positive self-image and a sense of purpose. The growth mindset can be developed through intentional effort and practice, and can be fostered by a supportive environment that encourages effort, learning, and growth. Psychologists and educators can help individuals develop a growth mindset by teaching them strategies for managing challenges, embracing failure as an opportunity to learn, and focusing on the process of growth and development.

At NU Psychology we help individuals to perceive challenges and failures as opportunities for growth and improvement. Individuals can learn to embrace the process of learning and developing new skills.which has an overall positive impact on motivation, resilience, and success. At NU Psychology we believe that a growth mindset, supports individuals to build resilience and cope with setbacks. Challenges and failures become opportunities for growth and learning.
